The 21st British National Conference on
Databases (BNCOD21) is taking place as part of DAMMS Week (Data
Analytics, Management, Manipulation and Storage), which offers a wide
range of co-located conferences and workshops all linked by the theme
"When Data is Key". While we clearly want to celebrate BNCOD's 21st
birthday by offering the traditional "Key to the Door", our theme
encompasses a much broader reality. Whether we are teaching students
the use of databases, applying database technologies in commercial
practice, researching the next generation of those technologies, or
searching for the key factors in the makeup of life itself, Data is
Key. In the development of the GRID technologies to support
e-Science and virtual communities, and in the development of the next
generation GRID technologies, Data is Key. In the development
of the World Wide Web and the move from simple presentation
technologies to complex markup and metadata tools and languages, Data
is Key.
