| The ORIENT software |
Introduction
With ORIENT we have produced the prototype of a novel type of educational computer role-playing game. The basic idea of the application is intercultural learning, that is to improve teenagers acceptance and appreciation of foreign cultures through a virtual role play experience. Orient is played by 3 users using tangible interaction devices (a dancemat, a Nintendo WiiMote and an RFID mobile phone). Users have to coorperate to progress in the game, which enables a layer of real world role play on top of the virtual role play. Our software prototype also includes a pack of content, which allows users to take on the roles of space commanders and explore the planet of Orient that is inhabited by an alien race called Sprytes. The users' goal is to learn more about the Sprytes' culture through interacting with them. The characters in the game act autonomously and are not scripted, but instead use a continous AI planner to make dynamic decisions based on the current situation. The AI takes into account character's needs, emotions and cultural group. To learn more about Orient please refer to the related papers in the Publications section of this website.
Download Orient
You can download the ORIENT software from this website and can run it also without the interaction devices. Make sure to read the installation guide and check the hardware requirements before downloading.
Download Orient software
(optional) Download Orient interaction software (requires mobile hardware devices)
If you just want to have a quick look and find downloading and installing the software too troublesome, you can also check out a video of the software in the media section.
Or, if you are an AI researcher, you might be interested in the Orient source code instead, which is available on Sourceforge.
