Invitation from the Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee

I am delighted to invite you to attend the Fourth International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Previous Congresses met in Paris in 1987, Washington, DC in 1991, and Hamburg in 1995, and the next Congress after Edinburgh will be in Sydney in 2003.

The main research frontiers of industrial and applied mathematics will feature strongly in the exciting programme for ICIAM 99 that is now coming together. Particular themes include mathematical modelling in industry, mathematics of medicine, financial mathematics, geophysical and oil sciences, large scale computation, environmental and climate science, cryptography and computer security. We expect new developments to be announced in many of these and other fields by our distinguished plenary lecturers.

Mini-symposia on topics related to the Congress themes, including active cross-disciplinary ones, will feature prominently in the Congress. Suggestions are still highly welcomed so why not discuss organising a mini-symposium with colleagues and international collaborators and submit a proposal for consideration? At ICIAM 99, convenors will be invited to report during the concluding plenary session on the main issues to have emerged in their mini-symposia. Another innovation will be to have organised discussion sessions to open out exciting and controversial topics, but for which a formal arrangement of a mini-symposium is less appropriate.

We are confident that what we are doing will make the Edinburgh ICIAM as enjoyable and fruitful as the other ICIAMs, with a special Scottish touch to make it unique! I look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh.

Professor Julian Hunt

Chair, Scientific Programme Committee
