BISEL
Biomedical Informatics Systems Engineering Laboratory
Home Page
BISEL, the Biomedical Informatics Systems Engineering Laboratory, focuses on issues that arise from bringing to bear the latest computer science developments in the context of biomedical research.
Research in the lab, covers the whole of the spectrum of biomedical informatics from the biologists using bioinformatics tools in their research through to computer scientists developing theories and technologies for application on problems in the biomedical domain. The laboratory places great importance on the knowledge transfer of computational theories and technologies into usable biomedical informatics tools.
The work concentrates on the next generation of distributed biomedical informatics systems. Particular areas of interest include the use and further development of Semantic Web technologies for such systems and the interoperability of biomedical atlases. Other research areas include:
- Anatomy Ontologies
- Argumentation Systems for Incomplete and Inconsistent Data
- AI Planning for Service Composition
- Spatial and Temporal Reasoning for Biomedical Atlas Integration
- Visualisation of Ontologies
- HCI for Biomedical Tools
We do a variety of research, and are funded by a range of bodies, in addition we have number of PhD student projects aligned with these activities. Current work includes:
Argudas - Argumentation-based Data Sharing across Gene Expression Databases (BBSRC)
RICORDO - Researching Interoperability using Core Reference Datasets and Ontologies for the Virtual Physiological Human (EU)
INCF Edinburgh Hub - Development of an INCF Hub for EMAP and EMAGE for the INCF Digital Atlas Infrastructure (INCF)
CUBIST - Bringing together business intelligence and semantic technologies. (EU)
