Technical Report HW-MACS-TR-0004

TitlePeople Create Software for People: A manifesto for Software Engineering research
AuthorsRob Pooley, Lachlan MacKinnon, Pauline Wilcox, Rick Dewar
Date2003-10-20
AbstractSoftware Engineering is one of a few core technologies which have driven the evolution of society today. Without its successes, computers would remain powerful tools in the hands of a few highly skilled professionals. Despite the incredible advances in hardware, the impact of computers for people has only been realised because of the success of Software Engineering in taming these beasts. This report explains the agenda of the newly formed Heriot-Watt Institute of Software Engineering (HWise). Our purpose is to raise the profile of Software Engineering and its importance in today’s technology led world; in research, in academic teaching and for professionals in industry. Through this report we put forward the HWise perspective of Software Engineering and some of the key related areas of work. We clarify the objectives of the HWise group, introducing recent projects and the core academic team.
