The Department

The Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics at Heriot-Watt University became the first of its kind in the UK when it was established in 1972. It has since grown to become internationally recognised as a leading centre of actuarial teaching and research. For several years, members of staff have contributed to the educational and professional activities of the Institute and the Faculty, including serving on syllabus review committees.

Including recent new appointments, there are 28 academic staff . These include 14 Fellows of either the Institute of Actuaries or the Faculty of Actuaries. There are 22 full-time staff and 6 part-time staff, including an eminent Research Consultant.  Several members of staff are examiners for the professional examinations of the Institute and Faculty.

The Actuarial Mathematics Department is part of the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS). Because these are core subjects for so many courses offered at Heriot-Watt, MACS has always been a flagship school of the university. It has top research and excellent teaching gradings and has become a lively international centre for leading-edge developments and exciting new courses.
