Roles and responsibilities

I teach the following courses:

  • F78PB Probability and Statistics B
  • F70DA Statistics Dissertation A

I am the Undergraduate Admissions Tutor for the Department of  Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics.

Research

My research is focussed on Bayesian stochastic modelling and statistical inference in infectious epidemiology
  • Engaged in work on the interface between Statistics and various areas in Actuarial Science, e.g. critical illness insurance and models for heart related conditions
  • Involved in inter-disciplinary research collaborations with scientists in life sciences and engineering
  • Actively supervising 4 PhD students in topics involving statistical modelling in infectious epidemiology, actuarial science and interest rate models.

Selected publications

  • Ozkok, E., STREFTARIS, G., Waters, H.R., and Wilkie, A.D. (2010) Bayesian inference and model selection in Critical Illness Insurance using a Burr GLM. Submitted to Insurance: Mathematics and Economics.
  • Zammitt, N.N., STREFTARIS, G., Gibson, G.J., Deary, I.J., Frier., B.M. (2010) Modelling the consistency of hypoglycemic symptoms: high variability in diabetes. To appear in Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics.

Biography

  • I hold a lecturer position at Heriot-Watt since 2004
  • Previous posts include post-doctoral positions at BioSS and Heriot-Watt
  • I am Principal Examiner for the Actuarial Profession in the UK (CT3)
  • Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society; member of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis; member of the Greek Statistical Institute
  • Education: PhD in Statistics (Edinburgh U); MSc (with Distinction) in Statistics and OR (Essex U); Ptychion (BSc) in Statistics and Actuarial Science (Piraeus U, Greece).

Further information

I am interested in supervising PhD projects in Statistics, applied especially in the areas of infectious epidemiology and actuarial science.

If you would like to study for a PhD in these areas, I will be happy to provide more information and discuss possible topics.
