I am currently the Programme Director for the MSc in Actuarial Science and I teach Life Insurance Mathematics and Risk Theory to this MSc class.
Research
My current research interests are in the field of the stochastic modelling of mortality and morbidity data. Much of this work has been inspired by, and sometimes in conjunction with, the UK actuarial profession's Continuous Mortality Investigation. In July 2011 I will cease to be involved with the CMI after 25 years of membership of various CMI committees.

I have been employed by Heriot-Watt University since 1975. During that time I have had short term/visiting appointments at The University of Copenhagen, The University of Waterloo and The University of Melbourne.
I have been awarded numerous research prizes, the most notable being the David G Halmstad Prize in 2005 for the "Best contribution to actuarial literature in 2003".
In 2006 I was awarded a Finlaison Medal by the Institute of Actuaries for "Services to the actuarial profession".
I qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA) in 1976 and I was elected a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries (FFA) in 1998.
