Texture Lab, My main interest concerns telling a story with data through the use of data visualisation. I came across this area in my undergraduate during an internship where I got the chance to use D3.js for the first time. I fell in love with the ability to present data in a way that allows people to gather new insights and understanding that they wouldn’t otherwise have when viewing data in tabular form.

At the moment, I’m looking into how we can use highly interactive visualisations to get a better understanding of the structure and treatment of concepts in learning materials. I’m hoping that this will allow for insights into how we can better select appropriate learning materials.

Below is an image of the current prototype that I’ve been working on, it shows the basic overview of a course that is taught at Heriot-Watt University with each lecture broken down into several different coloured topics. These colours relate to the hexagons on the left-hand side which have been produced using topic modelling on the lecture materials.

Tanya Howden BSc Computer Science (First-Class Honours) Texture Lab, School of Mathematical and Computer Science, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, EH14 4AS th101 at hw dot ac dot uk +44 (0)131 451 4166 LinkedIn profile Research Interests My main interest concerns telling … Continue reading
