The problem of observation of Benjamin-Feir or modulational instability of colinear waves in real one-dimensional systems is reviewed. It is illustrated by laboratory experiments on deep water waves, waves in electrical transmission lines and in optical birefringent fibers which, show the limit of the nonlinear Schrödinger model.
