Conference on Nonlinear Coherent Structures in Physics and Biology

Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland, July 10-14 1995

We are now starting to build up the conference proceedings and a solitons home page.

We have separate pages on Titles and most Abstracts, how to get here, the draft timetable, a taxi share scheme, information for talks and posters, information for visitors, and a local guide to restaurants and bars in Edinburgh.

A meeting on ``Nonlinear Coherent Structures in Physics and Biology", will be held in Scotland from Monday 10 July to Friday 14 July 1995. Talks will begin after lunch on the Monday and end at 5pm on the Friday. An informal workshop will be organised for Saturday 15 July for those wishing to stay on the Saturday night in order to get cheaper air fares. This conference is a continuation of the biennial meetings on the same topics held most recently in Dijon in 1991 and Bayreuth in 1993.

The proposed meeting, like its predecessors, is planned to bring together researchers who work in the field of coherent nonlinear structures, with an emphasis on nonlinear waves. There will be two ``themes" for the meeting, the first being mathematical and computational techniques for nonlinear wave problems, and the second being localization and transport of energy. Many of the talks would cover both of these themes, but there may be some cases where parallel sessions will be necessary. As with previous meetings, the emphasis would be on techniques and applications for nonlinear wave phenomena such as solitons, to problems in physics and biology. However other topics on the interface of these areas would be considered, since most of this work is very interdisciplinary in nature.

Heriot-Watt University lies in a campus in a green belt a few miles from the centre of Edinburgh, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The University is a 15 minute taxi ride from Edinburgh International Airport. All participants will have a room on campus within a few hundred metres of the central spur containing lecture theatres, dining rooms, shops, bank, bars, etc. This proximity means that discussions will often continue long after the formal events of the day have finished. The use of student residences for accommodation mean that the subsistence costs are kept to a minimum. The Campus is within walking distance of the famous canal on which Scott Russell first discovered the soliton.

The local management of the meeting will be run by Professor J C Eilbeck (chris@ma.hw.ac.uk) and Dr D B Duncan (dugald@ma.hw.ac.uk), of the Department of Mathematics. On an International level the meeting will be the responsibility of a Scientific Committee consisting of: P L Christiansen (Lyngby, Denmark), N Flytzanis (Crete), F Mertens (Bayreuth, Germany), J V Moloney (Cork, Ireland), D Parker (Edinburgh), R Parmentier (Salerno, Italy), M Peyrard (Lyon, France), M Remoissenet (Bourgogne, France), A C Scott (Lyngby, Denmark), K Spatschek (Düsseldorf, Germany).

The conference finances will be run on a minimal basis with delegates charged a small registration fee of £50 and a specially negotiated residence fee of £30.50 per day to cover bed, breakfast, lunch, coffee and tea (but not an evening meal). Delegates willing to share a bedroom are charged £22 per day. Anyone registering after 31 March 1995 will be charged an additional late registration fee of £30. Accommodation is limited so early registration is encouraged. We will attempt to attract some small supporting grants which will in most cases be available to support young researchers. Registration forms will be sent out shortly, if there is any delay the deadline given above will be posponed to enable delegates to have sufficient time to register.

We are grateful to the London Mathematical Society, the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, the Royal Society of London, the EPSRC, the Office of Naval Research (European Office) and the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development for financial support.

The organizers would like to encourage all communications regarding the conference to be carried out by email as far as possible. This WWW page will contain up-to-the minute information.

The 2nd announcement is now available and contains a registration form. A WWW list of Conference Titles and abstracts is available.
