In this talk I discuss current and recent developments in the strategic plans for education and research in Europe. I concentrate on different approaches for establishing quality, sustainability and funding and how Europe is planning the near future for education and research. I touch on quality assessment of higher education, on research assessment and comment on the role Arab universities and governments can play to establish sustainable quality education and research in the middleast.
