Image Montage I am a medical doctor who converted to Computing in 1998 through an Advanced MSc in Computer Science (Human-Computer Interaction) at Heriot-Watt University. I have been working in Computer Science research and teaching since. My main research focus is HCI and Biomedical Informatics, including interactive system design and development for Biomedical, Bioinformatics and Biological applications. My work has also included computer modelling of biological systems, ontologies, evolutionary computing and HCI aspects of augmented and virtual reality systems.

In more than ten years as a Researcher and Lecturer at Heriot-Watt University, I have been co-investigator for, and contributed significantly to writing, five research proposals. Four of these received funding worth in excess of £850,000 to the University.

My teaching experience spans both course and module development and lecturing at undergraduate and post-graduate levels (for campus-based and on-line courses) in:

I have supervised and marked MSc projects and dissertations, assisted with the supervision of PhD and Honours theses, and tutored in Human Factors and Java programming.

I am currently an examiner for the British Computer Society (BCS) Professional Examinations in User Interface Design and I also do consulting, web site and graphic design.

I qualified in Medicine in 1987, have full registration with the General Medical Council and I have been a Professional Member of the British Computer Society since 2004.

Due to domestic commitments, I have been working part-time in recent years, and have just finished working as a part-time Researcher on the BBSRC funded Argudas (Argumentation-based Data Sharing across Gene Expression Databases) project, lead by Dr. Albert Burger. However, I am now in a position to take on more substantial commitments.

I am a member of BISEL - Biomedical Informatics Systems Engineering Laboratory at Heriot-Watt University. I am registered for a part-time PhD with Heriot-Watt University as a staff candidate.
