About Me
I am a full Professor in the Computer Science department
in the School of MACS
(Mathematical and Computer Sciences) at Heriot Watt
University. I am the Diretor Centre for
Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems
(CDT-RAS) and Academic Lead for the
National
Robotarium. I am PI on the UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous
Systems Programme Node in
Trust. Finally, I am WP lead on
the EPSRC ORCA Hub.
I am affiliated with the Interaction
Lab, the Edinburgh
Centre of Robotics, the
HWU HRI Lab. I am interested in human-robot interaction and natural language
interfaces, in particular the best way to communicate with
remote autonomous systems and robots in hazardous environments including aspects of trust,
transparency, situation awareness and cognitive load. I am director of the newly formed INCRA Lab (INteraCtion foR Autonomy).
I am
SICSA AI Research Theme lead. In 2017, I received a Senior Resarch Fellowship from the Royal Society
of Engineering/Leverhulme. I was a founding member of the Royal
Society of Edinburgh, Young Academy.
Previously, I have worked in both academia and industry including Informatics at the University
of Edinburgh, The Advanced Technology Lab at Lockheed Martin, NJ, USA and AT&T Research Labs, NJ, USA.
I hold a PhD from Centre of Speech
Technology Research, an MS from
Georgetown University and
an MA from Edinburgh University.
