Local Setup

Desktop

The desktop environment used by default on the Linux Lab machines is Gnome. You can change this from the log-in manager (the window that asks for username and password).

Changing Password

To change your password type:

$ yppasswd
and then enter your old, and then your new password (valid on all Linux machines).

Remote Login

When logging into departmental machines from outside the university use the machine ssh.macs.hw.ac.uk. For example, on your laptop type:

$ ssh -X ssh.macs.hw.ac.uk
Windows that you open once logged in, will be displayed on your laptop. You should be able to directly ssh-connect to the lab machines, e.g. linux01. If you can't, ssh-connect to ssh.macs.hw.ac.uk and from there to e.g. linux01.

You can get a full graphical desktop when you use x2go to connect to one of these departmental machines: jove, linux01. The desktop you get should be identical to the one you see when physically working on one of the Linux machines. For more information and download links see: this question in the MACS CS FAQ
