Last updated: Thu May 30 09:45:24 GMT 1996

We are currently in the process of organising this workshop. The current plan is to hold the workshop in Ullapool from Monday the 8th to Wednesday the 10th of July. The organising committee includes:

Feel free to contact Satnam Singh for more information. We ask you to register for the workshop by completing the on-line registration form .

Historical Background

The Functional Programming Group at the University of Glasgow has been holding a workshop every year during the summer. The workshop participants include much of the Glasgow FP group plus other folk that have been invited. The workshop is informal and invitation-only, with the purpose of promoting high-quality functional programming research at Glasgow and improving contacts with research colleagues. The format we have found to work best is quite unusual: we have very short talks (10-15 minutes) with reasonable periods for questions/discussions, interspersed with long coffee and lunch breaks, and a free afternoon. This gives the workshop a very interactive feel with plenty of time to discuss ideas. Although in theory we do have strict limits on the total number who can attend, we hope not to run into those limits in practice!

Normally, everyone who goes to the workshop gives a talk and produces a paper for the draft workshop proceedings. All papers are refereed by other workshop participants (non-anonymously, but without bias!), and a selection of these papers go through to the final proceedings, which is published by Springer in their WICS series (Workshops in Computing Science). Papers can be modified between the draft proceedings and refereeing, and after refereeing but before the final proceedings is published.

The Venue

This year the workshop will be at the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool. It has good food, good whisky, a holiday atmosphere, and (according to Guy Argo) good pool tables. There's good hill-walking nearby, as well as boat trips to Seal Island that it may be possible to arrange for the free afternoon.

We do have to charge for the workshop (it's quite expensive to put on something like this), but we don't try to make a profit from it. The standard rates for the workshop (shown below) will include clubhouse accommodation (basic, but not uncomfortable), meals, both sets of proceedings and transport by COACH to/from Glasgow. The coach will travel up to Ullapool on Sunday afternoon/evening and return on Wednesday evening.

There is better accommodation available, but we'll have to charge a supplement for this (which is exactly the extra that we'll have to pay).

The address of the Ceilidh Place is 14 West Argyle Street, Ullapool, Wester Ross. IV26 2TY. Tel: 01854 612103, fax: 01854 612886.

Formatting Guidelines

A selection of refereed papers will hopefull appear in Springer-Verlag's Workshops in Computing series, edited by C.J. van Rijsbergen. This series is called eWiC and is published in electronic from on the web. A booklet can be purchased which gives an abstract for each paper and a password for accessing the full soft papers. If you are preparing a paper, please check out the submission guidelines at the eWiC web page. The hard submission deadline for the draft procceedings is Tuesday 2nd July.

The Price
