Privacy and security in a caregiving relationship

In this project we investigate privacy and security issues related to accessing online services in a carer-caree relationship. "A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support." [CarersTrust] In this way we hope to uncover the causes of issues that can impact the level of service available to the caree (for example, if they are unable to login to an account, or to make on online payment) or make the caree more vulnerable (for example, vulnerable to phishing, identity theft or bullying). While we plan to mainly consider online services, we will also consider other access methods, such as telephone, and in-person access.

Our research is motivated by the observation that most processes and technologies are designed for so-called "common interactions" with "average users", while the unique needs of carers and carees are not adequately addressed. Further, security and privacy solutions often sacrafice usability for security, with the result of increased access difficulties. With our research we hope to contribute much-needed insight into the needs of carers and carees, in order to improve the design of accessible privacy and security solutions.
