eLife

I am interested, from a social perspective, in how computer technology affects the way people behave and the kind of societies which might emerge as we adapt to technological advances. This research is generally undertaken via student projects and, in recent years, my students and I have investigated Electronic Voting Systems, eDemocracy, Spam and Direct Marketing, Effects of eShopping on High Street Stores, eBay and the Potential for a Supplier Society, Real-World Value of Virtual Objects, Virtual Currencies in Online Games, Accessibility and the WWW, Impact of Future HCI Technologies on People with Disabilities, Computer Mediated Communication, Chat Room Behaviour and Psychology, Information Disclosure on Social Networking Sites, Home Working, Surveillance and Privacy, Information Security and Data Losses, Computer Games and Reaction Times.

The work of PhD student Eliza Papadopoulou on striking the right balance between personalisation and privacy in pervasive systems also contributes to the eLife investigations.
