UK Ayletts on the Web

Don't ask what the point of this page really is - it merely satisfies the possessor of a somewhat unusual family name to see a number of them in print at once. I've stuck to the UK, though there are various Ayletts in Oz and Canada on the web.

As I haven't checked with all the people below on whether they would want their email address exposed to the outside world like this, I have only put in pointers to Ayletts with web pages. Ayletts who only have an email may be mentioned but their email is not given - if you really want to get in touch with any of them, you'll have to get in touch with me first.

If anyone on this page objects, just email me and I'll remove you. And if I've got it wrong , let me know what I should have said.

Aylett trivia

Ayletts mostly originate in Essex, with a bunch from the neighbouring edge of Hertfordshire and a few from Kent and from Cambridgeshire. For lots more about them see my All About Aylett pages.

Aylett, Virginia, on the Mattaponi River, is called that after an Aylett family whose ancestor probably arrived from Essex in the 1650s.

A number of very early female Ayletts with interesting first names basically equivalent to Ailith can be found in the Dictionary of English Surnames.

Dr Robert Aylett (1583-1655) was a prominent ecclesiatical lawyer and rather prolific poet of mostly religious verse. However his most accessible piece is probably 'A wife not ready made but bespoken'. His poetry is in the huge database of English poetry, and some of it can be browsed.

A relation of his, John Aylett (?1628-1669), lived in Boston, USA, in the early 1650s, then got captured by the Spanish in 1655/6. Eventually getting back to England, he joined the Cromwellian navy and fought against the Spanish around Jamaica. Thrown out after the Restoration, he rejoined for the second Dutch war and fought in the (unsuccessful) four day battle in 1666. Eventually he was killed when a flagship - the Oxford - on which he was taking part in a Council of War, blew up, killing nearly everybody.

An unfortunate Thomas Aylett got transported to Australia for seven years in 1837 after being convicted at the Herts Quarter Sessions in St Albans of stealing a tame duck.

James Aylett also got transported for seven years to Van Dieman's land (Tasmania) after being convicted at the Surrey Quarter Sessions in 1831 of stealing a piano - how did he do that?

Three other Aylett men are also known to have been transported, apart from those who emigratwed voluntarily after about 1850.

One intrepid Aylett family from Hawkwell joined one of the wagon trains to Utah in 1866.

There is a St Aylett near Saffron Waldron which is now a moated manor house but was originally some kind of a shrine to ane early (?Saxon) martyr

Were Ayletts and Aylotts originally the same name? Nobody knows - but all Aylotts seem to come from a fairly well-defined part of east Hertfordshire.
