Aims

To develop the mathematical skills and knowledge of data science students. The level of the material presented is appropriate for second year students and will be applied in the latter years of their courses.

Syllabus

1. First-Order Differential Equations (1.1 Terminology; First-Order DEs; Separation of Variables; Solution of DEs using Transformations; First-Order Linear DEs, Applications.)

2. Second-Order Differential Equations (2.1 Second-Order Homogeneous DEs with Constant Coefficients; Applications.)

3. Further Second-Order Differential Equations (3.1 Second-Order Inhomogeneous DEs with Constant Coefficients; Applications.)

4. Computer Algebra System (4.1 Accurately and precisely input mathematical syntax into a computer algebra system)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

solve linear ordinary differential equations of order 1 and 2, with and without initial conditions
compute partial derivatives of functions of several variables
verify solutions of a given partial differentiation equation
apply the mathematical concepts from this course to various disciplines in sciences and engineering
interact with computer algebra system by inputting mathematical data in an accurate and precise manner
