Aims

To introduce the student to a range of useful skills for carrying out an extended academic project and for future employment.

Syllabus

1. Professional Development Planning (1.1 Career management skills; Applications and Interviews; Business awareness and Creativity; Team-working)

2. Communicating Mathematics - Writing Skills (2.1 Project Work; Writing Mathematics; Typesetting Mathematics with LaTeX; Citations and References; Literature Reviews; Successful communication.)

3. Communicating Mathematics - Presentation Skills (3.1 Key Guidelines and Examples on giving a successful short presentation)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

Identify career choices and the main elements of the career planning process and develop an appropriate strategy to facilitate effective career management.
Produce a high-quality CV and covering letter.
Demonstrate an understanding of the job application and interview processes and produce a mock video interview of yourself.
Identify opportunities to increase appeal to employers.
Identify good and bad mathematical writing by critically reading mathematical text.
Research and write a coherent and concise report on a mathematical topic using LaTeX.
Produce and deliver a short oral presentation on a mathematical topic.
