Aims

The aim of this year long module is to enable students to register at Heriot Watt while studying abroad as part of their Maths with European Language degree. The students will study mathematics in a university abroad where the working language is French, German or Spanish as appropriate so that both mathematics and language skills will be enhanced in equal measure.

Syllabus

1. Follow a selection of mathematical modules in a French, German or Spanish University, as appropriate. (1.1 The mathematical content of this module will be as similar as possible to that covered by students in the third stage of their course at Heriot Watt although details of the courses may vary depending which university the students attend. The students will also enhance their language skills by learning mathematics in French, German or Spanish as appropriate.)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

Demonstrate the ability to complete a year of studies in Mathematics when the language of instruction is either French, German or Spanish as appropriate.
Practice logical reasoning to prove theorems and organize complex calculations in a clear manner.
Become more proficient in both oral and written interpreting into and from French, German or Spanish as appropriate.
Demonstrate a critical appreciation of intercultural issues and enhance their communication skills.
Reflect on their experience abroad by writing a short report after completion of the exchange year.
Professional Practice: Demonstrate the ability to learn independently, manage time, work to deadlines and prioritise workloads.
