2. Databases and Database Management System Concepts

3. Data Modelling & Database Design

4. Emerging database technologies (4.1 e.g .XML, Data Warehousing, alternative database models)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

• Establish the capabilities and limitations of data models and database management systems, in relational and XML paradigms to explain the nature, scope and boundaries of those
• Design databases to a specification by applying the theoretical foundations of databases
• Demonstrate competencies around the use of software tools and languages in the design, development and management of databases
• Critically appraise features and interfaces to DBMS systems to compare between different systems and establish capabilities of these
• Evaluate emerging database technologies
