Aims

To introduce students to the cutting edge of research in their field, using the guidance and expereise of active research groups.

To provide students with an opportunity to create and deliver a master-class on a topic to their peers.

Syllabus

1. Investigate a Research Topic (1.1 1. Work with an academic supervisor, 1.2 2. Investigate a state of the art topic of your choice, 1.3 3. Synthesis the research, 1.4 4. Self-directed study)

2. Create Teaching Materials (2.1 1. Structure and explain the research in order to..., 2.2 2. Create well-formed lecture material on the chosen topic, 2.3 3. Create interactive e.g. lab material for others to undertake)

3. Present Your Materials (3.1 1. Give the lecture to an audience of your peers, 3.2 2. Lead an interactive session, 3.3 3. Answer questions from peers about your topic, 3.4 4. Reflect on the process and peer feedback)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

investigate advanced, critical knowledge in a specialist area of Software Engineering or Computer Science
create learning materials on the chosen topic, using appropriate technologies
evaluate complex, ambiguous, and unreliable information sources with regards to the chosen topic
synthesise complex material for presenting to a diverse audience of peers
provide correct and well-formed answers to questions posed by peers, on the chosen topic
evaluate knowledge of emerging applications of, and alternatives to, the chosen topic
critically reflect on feedback provided by peers and propose future improvements
