Syllabus

1. Team working skill development (1.1 Teams given an open-ended specification that requires the construction of a robotic product prototype that includes digital, analogue, and embedded processor hardware, embedded software, and mechanical design. Students form a company of 5/6 individuals. Students develop the product specification. Students produce detailed project plans. Students manage the team, monitoring milestones and resource allocation.)

2. Business development skills (2.1 Teams produce a business plan for their company. Teams provide weekly meeting minutes and attend a weekly meeting with staff to present progress and specified project milestones.)

3. Assessments (3.1 The assessments are based on interim deliverables and meetings with project managers culminating in an afternoon of product presentations to staff, outside bodies, and their year students. Final assessment involves the submission of a project technical report.)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

• critically analyse overall product design and technical challenges in integrating diverse technologies within robotics projects
• collaborate effectively within a team to address complex design tasks, demonstrating accountability and adherence to self-imposed deadlines
• apply project management tools for planning, execution, and presentation of robotics projects, while producing comprehensive team documentation
• communicate project outcomes to academic and industry professionals through demonstrations and presentations, exhibiting strong presentation techniques
• operate as a member in a self-managed team, taking responsibility for project tasks and contributing autonomously to achieve collective goals
