Aims

In this module students will:

develop independent research skills

obtain an in-depth understanding of a topic of current importance in statistical science

develop report writing and presentation skills

Syllabus

1. The student will prepare a dissertation under the supervision of an academic member of staff on an approved topic. (1.1 The student will prepare a dissertation of key research techinques used and findings based on literature review, development of statistical methodologies, implementation of computer codes and results obtained.)

2. The student will prepare a presentation of key research activities and findings based on his/her work (2.1 The student will prepare a presentation of key research activities and findings based on his/her work)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:

Analyse relevant research literature on a topical issue or problem in statistical science and critically evaluate them.
Evaluate the technical and ethical implications related to statistical enquiry, including study design, data collection, and data analysis.
Formulate statistical techniques, software and suitable computing methods to solve practical problems for scientific research or industry applications.
Interpret research findings, draw appropriate conclusions, and effectively communicate them to both technical and non-technical individuals in writing and in presentations.
Demonstrate the ability to learn independently, effective time management and prioritise workloads.
