F78ZD - Further Statistical Theory
Course leader(s):
Aims
- To introduce statistical modelling, estimation, hypothesis testing and regression and develop the basis for their application
Syllabus
1. Comparisons of data from two populations
2. Statistical Inference for data from one population
3. Hypothesis testing: introduction, terminology and test statistics for typical situations
4. Issues related to association between two variables: graphical techniques, correlation and contingency tables
5. Linear regression
6. Simulation and statistical computing
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
- Construct confidence intervals for means, variances and proportions for single and for two populations
- Test hypotheses involving means, variances and proportions for single and for two populations
- Measure the association between two variables with Pearson's correlation coefficient and hypothesis test
- Formulate a single linear regression model using the method of ordinary least squares
