Introduction to industrial data communications and computer networking
Understanding of the structure of the Internet
Understanding of the concepts of connection-oriented and connectionless communication, and of practical principles of
computer network protocols.

Pre-requisite course(s): F27CX Introduction to Computer Systems (GA) & F28IR Internet Technologies 2 (GA) .

Location: Edinburgh.

Semester: AY.

Syllabus:

OSI and Internet reference models.
• Link level communications, data transparency, error detection, sliding window protocols.
• Network layer protocols, IP, ICMP
• Network routing
• Routers
• Transport protocols, TCP, UDP
• TCP Congestion control

Learning Outcomes: Subject Mastery

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of essential facts, concepts, theories and principles pertaining to
computer network protocols.
• Appreciate necessity for formal specification and verification of protocols.
• Appreciate the complexity of network infrastructure and its sensitivity to parameter choices
