• Obtain an in-depth understanding of a topic of current importance in data science.
• Develop report writing and presentation skill.

Syllabus:
The student will prepare a dissertation under the supervision of an academic member of staff on a topic approved by the
Director of Studies.
Learning Outcomes: Subject Mastery
On completion of this course students should be able to:
• Read and understand the current literature related to a topical issue or problem in data science
• Demonstrate expertise in applying recently acquired knowledge to important practical problems in data science
• Explain to peers and colleagues in a professional setting, the applicability of technical data analysis methodology to
various problems in industry or scientific research.
Learning Outcomes: Personal Abilities
At the end of the course students should be able to:
• Demonstrate the ability to learn independently.
• Manage time, work to deadlines and prioritise workloads.
• Summarise and explain in writing an important new development or current methodology in data science and
understand its usefulness in the professional practice of data science.
• Present investigation results in writing and orally in a way which demonstrates that they have understood the
technical and broader issues related to the chosen dissertation topic.
• Use data analysis techniques and appropriate computing techniques to solve practical problems and to present
the solution of these problems appropriately to both technical and non-technical audiences.
