Aims:

In this module, students will develop independent research skills, obtain an in-depth understanding of a topic of current
importance in data science, and develop report writing and presentation skills.

Pre-requisites: none.

Location: Dubai, Edinburgh, Malaysia.

Semester: 2.

Syllabus:

The student will prepare a dissertation under the supervision of an academic member of staff on a topic approved by the
Director of Studies.

Learning Outcomes: Subject Mastery

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
• Read and understand the current literature related to a topical issue or problem in data science.
• Demonstrate expertise in applying recently acquired knowledge to important practical problems in data science.
• Explain to peers and colleagues in a professional setting, the applicability of data science methodology to various
problems in industry or scientific research.

Learning Outcomes: Personal Abilities

At the end of the module, students should be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to learn independently.
Manage time, work to deadlines and prioritise workloads.
Summarise and explain in writing an important new development or current methodology in data science and understand its
usefulness in the professional practice of data science.
Present investigation results in writing and orally in a way which demonstrates that they have understood the technical and
broader issues related to the chosen dissertation topic.
Use data analysis techniques and appropriate computing techniques to solve practical problems and to present the solution
of these problems appropriately to both technical and non-technical audiences.
