The formal regulations for the individual programmes and overall univeristy regulations take precendence over this guide.\u00a0Assessment at Heriot-Watt is based on the CAPS (Common Assessment and Progression System). In CAPS your exam result for each course will be presented in the form of a letter grade (A &#8211; F) where<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Grade<\/td>\n<td>A<\/td>\n<td>B<\/td>\n<td>C<\/td>\n<td>D<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Approx. Mark<\/td>\n<td>70%-100%<\/td>\n<td>60%-69%<\/td>\n<td>50%-59%<\/td>\n<td>40%-49%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The final mark for each course will consist of continuous assessment or hand-in work (from 0% to 100% of the total) with a formal exam making up any remainder.<\/p>\n<p>MSc resits are normally held the next time the exam is held. That will usually be one year later. Resitting should be considered as a last resort. Students will not normally be allowed to carry out the project part of the MSc if they have not satisfied the requirements on the taught courses<\/p>\n<p><b>Pass and Distinction in the MSc<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Normally, to pass the MSc you need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50% average mark on your 8 taught courses most courses at grade C or better<\/li>\n<li>none less than grade D<\/li>\n<li>dissertation at grade C or better<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Normally, to gain a distinction in the MSc course you need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>70% average mark on your 8 taught courses most courses at grade A<\/li>\n<li>none less than grade C<\/li>\n<li>dissertation at grade A<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pass and Distinction in the Diploma<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Normally, to pass the Diploma course you need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>40% average mark on your 8 taught courses<\/li>\n<li>most courses at grade D or better<\/li>\n<li>none less than grade E<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Normally, to gain a distinction in the Diploma course you need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>70% average mark on your 8 taught courses<\/li>\n<li>most courses at grade A<\/li>\n<li>none less than grade C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>To pass the Certificate course you need:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>40% average mark on 4 taught courses<\/li>\n<li>most courses at grade D or better<\/li>\n<li>none less than grade E<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a summary guide only.
