About me

Hello, my name is Marcelo Pereyra, I am an Associate Professor in Statistics at the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences of Heriot-Watt University, and the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences. My research is mainly about new mathematical theory, methods and algorithms to solve challenging inverse problems related to mathematical and computational imaging. I am particularly interested in new Bayesian analysis and computation approaches for imaging, and in the synergy between the statistical, the variational analytical, and the machine learning paradigms for developing imaging methodology. My research time and my research team are generously funded by three UKRI EPSRC grants (see projects BOLT, BLOOM, and LEXCI) and by the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

I originally studied Electronic Engineering in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and in Toulouse (France), and obtained a PhD degree in Signal Processing from the University of Toulouse in 2012. From 2012 to 2016 I was a Research Fellow in Statistics at the School of Mathematics of the University of Bristol, funded by a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development, a Brunel Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Statistics, a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from French Ministry of Defence. In 2019, I had the honour of holding an Invited Professor position at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris during the "Mathematics of Imaging" trimester.

I am also Associate Editor for the AIMS journal Foundations of Data Science. I was an Associate editor for Digital Signal Processing from 2016 to 2021, and previously I was a Guest Editor for the IEEE J-STSP special issue on "Stochastic Simulation and Optimisation in Signal Processing" (see issue). I am currently organising the 3rd IMA Conference on Inverse Problems, which will be held in Edinburgh in May 2022 at the ICMS.

Short biosketch

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1984. I studied Electronic Engineering and received a double M.Eng. degree from ITBA (Argentina) and INSA Toulouse (France), together with a M.Sc. degree from INSA Toulouse, in June 2009. In July 2012 I obtained a Ph.D. degree in Signal Processing from the University of Toulouse. Then, from 2012 to 2016, I was a Research Fellow in Statistics at the School of Mathematics of the University of Bristol on research fellowships from Europe, UK, and France. In 2017, I joined the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences & Heriot-Watt University as an Asssistant Professor in Statistics, and was then promoted to Associate Professor in Statistics in 2019. During 2019, I also had the honour of holding an Invited Professor position at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris during the "Mathematics of Imaging" trimester. I am also the recipient of a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development (2013), a Brunel Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Statistics (2012), a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from French Ministry of Defence (2012), a Leopold Escande PhD Thesis excellent award from the University of Toulouse (2012), an INFOTEL R&D excellent award from the Association of Engineers of INSA Toulouse (2009), and an ITBA R&D excellence award from the Buenos Aires Institute of Technology (2007).
