Combing and Uniting Business Intelligence
with Semantic Technologies



CUBIST was an EU project (FP7-ICT-2009-5) that brought together Business Intelligence and Semantic Technologies to generate a prototype Semantic Business Intelligence solution.

Business Intelligence (BI) focuses on analysing structured operational data, in particular numerical data, visualising it using a range of simple charts (e.g. bar charts or scatter plots). Semantic BI (SBI) takes this further by including unstructured data and by analysing relationships rather than numbers. SBI and BI should be viewed as complementary.

HWU managed the biological use case for CUBIST: based on the in situ hybridisation gene expression data held within the EMAGE database.

During CUBIST, a prototype SBI tool was developed that used novel visualisations to present the relationships held within EMAGE. For a quick overview, see the promotional video:
