WARNSCALE HEAD - 2005-06

Over the winter of 2004/5,
many slates were blown or
slipped out of place.

After lengthy consideration, we agreed, rather reluctantly, that in the interests of a weatherproof
roof we were going to have to compromise our ideal of all-traditional construction.
The original slates, which are being retained, are just too rough to provide a leak-proof
roof on their own.

We therefore decided to insert an intermediate roof layer of sarking and breathable material,
and to fasten the slates with stainless steel screws and `penny' washers.

The first part of this work - taking off all slates and inserting the sarking and breathable
material - was carried out over two weekends in October 2005.

This was followed by a major setback: a gale in January 2006 lifted the front half of the roof and left it folded over on top of the back half. In retrospect, we really should have wired the roof down in October. Special thanks are due to Scott Henderson and David Oldfield of the National Park for straightening the damaged roof and securing it with wires.

At last, on 29/30th April, two days of ideal weather - cool, calm, mainly sunny - saw the
damage of the January gales repaired and the slates all back on, so the bothy is usable again.

There will probably be another work party later in the summer - maybe not till early September -
to do some pointing and an interior decoration makeover.
Do get in touch if you are interested in helping then - or at any time if you have questions,
or a report on the bothy.
