Over the winter of 2004/5,
many slates were blown or slipped out of place. |
After lengthy consideration, we agreed,
rather reluctantly, that in the interests of a weatherproof
roof we were going to have to compromise our ideal of
all-traditional construction.
The original slates, which are
being retained, are just too rough to provide a leak-proof
roof on their own.
We therefore decided to insert an intermediate roof layer of
sarking and breathable material,
and to fasten the slates with
stainless steel screws and `penny' washers.
The first part of this work - taking off all slates and inserting
the sarking and breathable
material - was carried out over two
weekends in October 2005.

At last, on 29/30th April, two days of ideal weather - cool, calm,
mainly sunny - saw the
damage of the January gales repaired and the slates all back on,
so the bothy is usable again.
