The number 275 is already placed on the
abacus (fig 1). The first column on the right is the column of the units, the next one is the tens and the third one is the hundreds. We want to add the number 783. We start the addition always from left to right. Thus, the first step is to add 7 (783) in the column of hundreds .There are already 2, plus 7 equal to 9. So the number the abacus represents now is 975 (fig 2). |
