Step 1

                                          
  To place a number when you multiply,
leave as many free columns on the right
of the abacus as many are the digits of
the multiplier.
Here, the multiplier, 32, has two digits, so
leave two free columns on the right of the
abacus and then place the multiplicand
68 (fig 1).
