Abstract
Data science recently made the news, but often for all the wrong reasons. From the racist sentencing support algorithm in the US to the cara.data fiasco, it is becoming increasingly clear that data-driven solutions to social problems will fail if ethical and legal considerations are not much more prominently incorporated into the design and development process. The talk will look at two very different ways to regulate the use of data science applications, the upcoming GDPR as an example of hard law, and the data ethics framework of the Cabinet Office's ethics framework as an example of soft law, to discuss the implications these have for programers and developers of data-driven applications.
