Abstract

This talk unifies my work on "Semantics derived automatically from language corpora contain human-like biases" and "The meaning of the EPSRC principles of robotics" into a coherent whole, explaining what I meant to say in 2007 when I wrote "Robots should be slaves".

Bio

Joanna Bryson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computing at the University of Bath. She works on Artificial Intelligence, ethics and collaborative cognition. Her work is focussed on "Standardizing Ethical Design for Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems".

In 2010 Bryson published her most controversial work, "Robots Should Be Slaves", which was selected as a chapter in Yorick Wilks' "Close Engagements with Artificial Companions: Key Social, Psychological, Ethical and Design Issues". She helped the EPSRC to define the Principles of Robotics in 2010. She has consulted The Red Cross on autonomous weapons and is a member of an All Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence. In 2017 she won an Outstanding Achievement award from Cognition X. She regularly appears in national media, talking about human-robot relationships and the ethics of AI.
