AI Planning and Urban Traffic Control

(An overview of my understanding of urban traffic control, and how to exploit AI planning for dealing with some of its aspects)

Abstract

The global growth in urbanisation increases the demand for services including road transport infrastructure, presenting challenges in terms of mobility. Optimising the exploitation of urban road network is a great challenge. In this talk, after introducing urban traffic control and the challenges it has to face, I'll describe SimplifAI, the result of a number of UK research council grant funded projects which aims at automating the control of traffic within a large city centre. A major focus of the automation is to deal with abnormal or unexpected events such as roadworks, road closures or excessive demand, resulting in periods of saturation of the network within some region of the city.

Bio

Mauro is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield. His main research interests are in AI Planning, Knowledge Engineering, and Argumentation. Together with Lee McCluskey, he is currently working on the exploitation of automated planning technologies for urban traffic control. They are collaborating with, among the others, Transport for Greater Manchester and British Telecommunications. On this topic, Mauro recently started a Researcher in Residence project with the TS Catapult for investigating how the use of planning techniques can help distributing Connected Autonomous Vehicles in urban area networks. He has also been involved and interested in real-world applications of AI techniques in the fields of Medicine and Computational Creativity in Music.
