Step 4

                                          
  The fourth step is to multiply 4x3=12
( 4 x 316 ). Place number 2 ( 12 ) in
the hundreds' place of the product; i.e.
add 2 to the hundreds' of the preceding
partial product ( 064 ). Thus 2 plus 0
equals 2. The tens' place of the product
should now read 2. Immediately cancel
the 3 (316) in the hundreds' place of the
multiplicand and place number 1( 12 ).
The final product is 1264 (fig 1).
