Title:

Statistical data analysis using R, a system for statistical computation and graphics

Lecturer(s):Shravan Vasishth (Linguistics, Potsdam University)
Type:Foundational Course
Section:Language and Computation
Week:Second
Time: 11.00-12.30 (Slot 2)
Webpage:http://www.ling.osu.edu/~vasishth/ESSLLI2005/
Room:CM G.01

Description

This course will focus on the mathematical underpinnings of hypothesis
testing in the Fisher tradition. The theory will be developed in
conjunction with a powerful (and freely available) programming language
specially designed for statistical analysis. Students will learn to (a)
define their own research problem in terms of mathematical models; (b)
understand which test to apply given the properties of their own
particular data and experiment design, and (c) program and automate data
analysis. The latest version of the course lecture notes is available
from my home page (http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/~vasishth) or from the
mirror at Ohio State University (usually more stable than the Potsdam
server).

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE PARTICIPANTS:
If you are fairly sure you will attend this course at ESSLLI, please
email me (see my web page for details) so that I can get some advance
information of what kind and range of background knowledge to expect from
the class.
