Background

I'm currently working as a Technology Enhanced Learning Specialist for the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS) at Heriot-Watt University. I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT).

I previously worked as a Research Associate for the Institute for Computer Based Learning and Distance Learning Manager School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. I graduated from Heriot-Watt in July 2004, with a 2:1 BSc Hons in Mathematics before returning a year later to study MSc Information Technology (Multimedia), graduating with distinction in November 2005. I joined ICBL in January 2006.

Current Work

As a TEL specialist I support learning technology for the school across all of our global campuses and learning partners. This has included the pilotting and roll of technologies such as Gradescope for Digital Marking, Respondus Lockdown Browser for Secure Examinations and tools such as SStack/CodeRunner for STEM assessmnets.

Previous Work

My responsibilities as Distance Learning Manager for the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University were to co-ordinate the distance learning activity within the school and manage the creation, repurposing and delivery of online learning materials in support of off-campus degree courses.

Past Projects

As a Research Associate I have worked on many projects related to enhancing the shareability of computer-based learning resources and to current awareness services for researchers. These projects were funded under the JISC Open Educational Resources (UKOER), Rapid Innovation (JISCRI) and Virtual Research Environments Rapid Innovation (VRERI) strands.

Personal

Outside work, I have various other interests, the main one being karate. I'm a 6th Dan blackbelt in the style of Wado Kai and my individual titles included Scottish Champion (at Open Weight) , Scottish International Open Champion and Irish International Open Champion. I represented the Scottish National Karate Team from 2004-2008 at World and European level with my best individual performances being 4th place in the European Senior Championshiops in Moscow in 2004. I have also been a Silver medalist at the British Karate Championships.

I also represented Scotland Wado-Kai Karate team from 1998-2009 winning 2 x Silver and 6 x Bronze medals at the European Wado Cup. In team events I have been Scottish, Scottish Open, Irish Open, British, European Wado and Commonwelath Team Champion. I am a secretary and webmaster for Shuzoku Wado-Kai Association. I now teach my own class for Azami Karate Group.

After a break from competitions I am now back on the Scotland Wado-Kai team competitng at the Federation of European Wado-Kai Championships. My most recent title was German International Wado Cup Champion in May 2005.
